I'm a USMC Vietnam veteran, a 14-year police officer and lawyer. I am a Democrat, social progressive and fiscal moderate.
I have 3 handguns. I am not against gun ownership. I often carry a pistol on motorcycle camping trips. Hunting, sportsmen, protection? Fine.
How can we support the Constitutional ‘right to bear arms’ , within some reasonable societal framework that meets the needs of all concerned?
Carrying assault rifles on afternoon shopping trips to Walmart? No. We must cut back on the number of firearms in circulation and more closely monitor who can buy them, where they are, who has access to them. A Constitutional right is not some unlimited, open -ended license that keeps expanding into social oblivion.
Firearms must therefore be traceable from manufacture through sale/transfer, with serious penalties for possession, sale, purchase of firearms outside the system. It will not work unless it is cooperative on a national level. Just like we do cars and boats
There must be a licensing system that includes licensure itself, background checks, safety training, storage requirements and liability insurance.
Violations alleged must be quickly reviewed with a high standard of constitutional freedom guiding the review. Every effort must be made to support the Constitutional right to bear arms, within this regulatory framework.
All costs for this system should be assessed against the firearms industry.
Zero tolerance for illegal sale, purchase, non-insurance, possession and carriage. Nationwide.
