There was a muffled sound as the body hit the floor.
Not a crash or bang, but a muffled thud—indeed a pathetic sound. An elderly man’s frail, diminished body in a flannel bathrobe, falling alone, for the last time.
For those few moments, the old man’s minds-eye transported him to a time when he had been young and strong. When his life wasn’t yet winding down and everything was really still possible.
He smiled. The road appeared before him. Relief, a tremendous weight lifted from him. This time, he let go.
