DO YOU REALLY HAVE ANY IDEA?

Do you really have ANY idea, REALLY, of what happens to a family who has no health care insurance, living payday to payday, and has a family member go into the hospital? I mean a working, poor family. Or a working middle class family.

I DO. I practiced consumer bankruptcy law for several years.

They are hounded for bills they cannot pay. Months go by, of calls, visits, harassment. They charge credit cards and borrow to keep the wolf back. The debt is sold to collectors. The debt is on credit reports. They cannot escape it. It becomes their whole existence of terror.

They can't finance a decent car, except at a buy-here-pay here. They can't buy or rent a decent house. The collection terror is ramped up. They borrow from family. They hunker down. They don't know what to do. They cannot get student loans or get into training programs. Their children suffer immeasurably. They often cannot change jobs--cannot get decent jobs or promotions (credit checks). They can't move away from the Credit Bureau computers. They are served with lawsuits. The sheriff at the door and the phone/mail terror escalates. Bank accounts are frozen. They can't open another bank account. Every avenue is exhausted. They are decimated and demoralized.

Eventually, if lucky, they file a bankruptcy petition and stop the nightmare. Then, a few years later they can start over. From the wreckage and rubble of their lives. This happened because someone got sick. Is that really GOOD for our society?
