CAMPING TRAIL FROM MIAMI TO KEY WEST
Having lived in the Florida Keys, and spent huge amounts of time up on all of the islands (“keys”) in the 70’s, from Key West to Islamorada- I have a special place in my heart for all things FLORIDA KEYS. The roads, trails, isolated beaches and paths up on Little Duck, Big Pine, Spanish Harbor, Sugarloaf, Marathon.... I know them all and I have stories to tell. (I was a State Trooper, stationed in Key West 72-76; FKCC Criminal Justice A.A. ‘75
Sooooo... I was delighted and excited to learn that a new state lark trail system had been planned and created, while I wasn’t looking.
What a great idea—-to hike from Islamorada to Key West, camping, noshing, journaling, photographing!
You walk along the same route that Henry Flagler and his engineers / skilled labor spent 7 years building. A RAILROAD to Key West over the water!indeed, 23 of the old railroad bridges (that were the overseas highway until the 70’s)- the bridges are used as trail segments and are part of the trek. You walk on the RR / Highway bridge, over the water to the next island. Yeah.
For the creators, movers, shakers and financiers— this project was daunting.
