It is worse than Bernie says, because we also, generally, strip them of their citizens civil rights for life, so they pay for their crime forever, cannot vote, all kinds of restrictions-- and we create a situation where, when someone has honorably done their time, they simply cannot get back in the real job force and pick up where they left off at all. They cannot even work at BK. Can't get bonded to drive a truck, can't get a job that polygraphs, can't get a real government or corporate job---and all of this is after they have paid their debt to society, over some silly pot bust. It's pretty silly and it's a really problem and a huge waste of money
As Jimmy Carter said years ago, "Penalties against possession of a drug should not be more damaging to an individual than the use of the drug itself; and where they are, they should be changed. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against possession of marijuana in private for personal use."
It is a triple fiasco (this is where I disclaim that I do not use marijuana, any drugs, smoke or drink, so I don't personally have skin in that game) --BUT...what about cloth, paper, building materials, rope, twine, packaging, fodder, ecology, fast growth...commercially, it is incredible. It is laughable...the way we have gone about this. Ridiculous. It is on the order of Pat Robertson claiming that gays will addict everyone to anal sex.
