Just to let you know where I am, aside from surrounded by cornfields and a huge cadre of people with missing car windows and teeth, we have the TV NEWS MORNING PLEDGE. Yes. Cub Scouts. Yaaaayyy. Patriotism is alive and well.

I would have thought patriotism also included a working knowledge of our history, our form of government, the branches of government and world geography-- and how proud and important our place has been, in these areas. However, what passes for patriotism ?-- Cub Scouts, in quasi-uniform, saluting like the Hitler Youth, reciting the "Pledge" -- assuring themselves that we are a nation "under God" [where and what is God? What political subdivisions are 'under' "him"-- are there some nations that are NOT under God?]--

now, there is nothing wrong with our Nations symbols...but it is a good time, early in life, to teach children that our symbols are important...but that "liberty and justice for all" is something that requires THINKING, not SALUTING. Also, as an aside, it seems doubtful that there is a definitive supreme being, choosing political subdivisions to support. Otherwise, God would, say love Mayberry and hate Los Angeles?
